1 year old??!!

Kolten Luke Duwel was born on Sept 27th, 2009 at 12:08 pm. 8 lbs 2oz 21 1/4 inches. It was a time in my life I will never forget! EVER! As I think back a year ago, what I was doing, where we were, who I was with, I get an overwhelmed with many emotions as I think about how it was just me and my sweet baby girl, alone, here in Arizona. Daddy was in Iraq. Waiting for a phone call that would change his life. I can't imagine how he must have felt over there, waiting. Not being able to see his first sone be born. But what a strong man he is, and if this sweet little boy gets any of that from his dad, he will be one heck of a man! I remember my mom flying in from utah, and how THANKFUL I was that she made here to be with me. I remember sitting at home, watching Women's Conference, and then going out to Red Robin to eat! ( Funny that i did that very exact same thing this year? just a day ahead :) ) I remember going to bed that night, and about 2 hours later waking up to some contractions that I knew instantly were the real thing! When I think about that I can remember thinking to myself, here I am..on my bed..timing my contractions. Alone. My husband should be here. I started to get scared so I went in and woke my mom up. Poor thing had only gotten a couple hours of sleep after flying in that day. I felt so bad! After we timed the contractions for a while and they were 2 minutes apart, I made a VERY important phone call!! I remember calling the Master sergant at 1:30 in the morning. Of course, to my worst nightmare, he didn't answer! He was my link to getting ahold of Luke. Well I somehow had a number, that directed me to Iraq, so I called it. Got a very nice (all military guys scare me.) man on the other end, I explained my situation to him, he told me he knew EXACTLY who my husband was and knew exactly where he was! I was SO relieved! I have 2 of the most AMAZING friends that i called and told them it was time. Jesse came over and spent the night on my couch, to help out with Britlyn! Ever so greatful for him :) and us girls headed to the hospital. It is about a 30 minute drive, and by the time they admitted me, Luke called! SO HAPPY!! I sat with him on the phone for a while and then they got the cameras all set up and he went to the Red Cross building where he had his cameras. It was such an awesome and comforting feeling to see him on that little screen, even though i wished more than ever he was right next to me. I couldn't have been more happy! He stayed on that computer the entire time, even when I would go for walks around the hospital. I hated leaving that room and leaving him in there. I think i cried the first time I had to leave him sitting there! He was such a big support, even if he was half way around the world! It was a long night for everyone, but so very worth the wait. I had to take a hot shower to get my contractions going and once I did I progressed pretty fast! I could handle the contractions pretty well...Finally it was time to start pushing! I pushed for a while, thanks to my doctor :( and just about the time I had Kolten, I chickened out and got the epidural! Which did nothing but paralyze me from the stomach up so I couldn't move my upper body, but at least it took the contractions away! I still felt that little buggar be born, but I wouldn't trade it for the world! He was worth EVERY ounce of pain that I felt! Even if I did want to pass out from it :) At 12:08 the sweetest baby boy I could have ever imagined was lifted up into the air, and no, I was not the first person my doctor thought of to give the baby to, He lifted that sweet baby up, and turned to his side, and showed his Daddy on the computer, his son! After daddy got a good look, we cut the cord and he layed him on my chest! I will be ever greatful to that doctor for giving Luke the chance to feel apart of his birth! That was so important to me that Luke felt apart of it, and like he was there, and I feel like we did the very best we could!

Never in a million years, would I have guessed that This past year would be full of so much love, laughter and tears! We have enjoyed watching Kolten grow into a sweet little boy! Well he's not so little, but we love that about him, cuz that's what makes him, him. We are still trying to figure out where he came from, as neither of us really think he looks like either side, but we think maybe more my side? but not a definate either one really. This little guy has gone through alot in his first year of life, and I only hope it will make him strong :) He is such a tank and oh so very active at all times of the day! He is difficult at times, I blame it on his size, but I love him just the same :) I can't imagine my life without him, and I can't wait for MANY more birthdays to come! And we are proud to say, that daddy won't have to miss another day of his life :) It has been so fun to have a little boy and to see the differences between him and Britlyn. They are totally different in EVERy way :) This kid is beyond fearless! He loves his daddy more than anything, especially when he walks through the door and dad starts to wrestle with him! I fell like they will have a special bond and I love that!
